An Atlanta-based wireless communications research development company, IPCO LLC, accused a provider of electricity metering products, Elster Electricity LLC, of patent infringement. IPCO LLC will seek upwards of $100 million in damages, according to sources from IPCO LLC. According to IPCO LLC, Elster Electricity Energy Axis System willfully and deliberately infringes IPCO's U.S. Patent No. 6,249,516, which was issued to the plaintiff in 2001. IPCO filed suit in the U.S. District Court for the Northern District of Georgia. "IPCO has suffered damages as a result of Elster's infringement of the '516 Patent and will continue to suffer damages and irreparable harm in the future unless Elster is enjoined from infringing further the '516 Patent," said Joel Goldman, vice president general counsel for IPCO LLC.

Power Integrations sued System General Corp., of Taipei, Taiwan, in 2004 for using Power Integrations-patented technology in one of its integrated circuits and in an LCD monitor that uses the circuits. The International Trade Commission in June announced Jun 8 it would investigate Power Integrations' claims against System General. If the ITC sees patent violations in the System General products, it could bar them from the U.S. market. Meanwhile, System General challenged the lawsuit alleging that California courts have no jurisdiction. But Power Integrations said Thursday that the court sided with them, which means that if the ITC doesn't take action, power Integrations' suit in state court can proceed.
