Computer disk-drive maker Western Digital Corp. said on Wednesday that it will make a one-time payment of $24 million to settle a patent infringement lawsuit by Papst Licensing GmbH & Co. KG. The agreement, which was reached July 4, will result in a net charge to operations of $19 million, which will be reflected in the quarter ended July 1, Western Digital said in a U.S. regulatory filing. Papst Licensing, a German firm, has agreed to drop its lawsuit, release all past, present and future infringement claims of those Papst patents and grant a fully-paid license to certain patents, Western Digital said in a filing with the U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission.

Microsoft has settled its legal spat with data networking firm Alacritech, which led to a court injunction stopping the "making, using, offering for sale, selling, importing or inducing others to use Microsoft's [forthcoming Windows API] Chimney or Longhorn software." The suit centered on two alleged patent infringements in which Microsoft was accused of using Alacritech's session-layer interface control (SLIC) technology to speed up data transfer. The settlement includes payment of undisclosed amounts to Alacritech and an agreement to develop the technology with Microsoft and Broadcom. "Alacritech's SLIC technology architecture is a key component of next-generation scalable networking," said Larry Boucher, president of Alacritech. "Today's agreement will help facilitate the widespread adoption of technology that is a key enabler of efficient data delivery."

Amberwave Systems Corp., a privately held developer of chip technology, has filed a patent-infringement suit against Intel Corp. Salem-based Amberwave claimed Monday that Intel is using its proprietary techniques as part of the ``strained silicon'' technology used in Pentium microprocessors. On May 25, Intel sought a determination that it doesn't infringe the patent. Amberwave Monday filed a counterclaim against Intel's action and said the litigation arose after Intel refused to negotiate a ``commercially reasonable" license agreement.

British drug maker Shire Pharmaceuticals Group on Monday said that a patent infringement lawsuit it filed against Nostrum Pharmaceuticals, a New Jersey-based drug company, will go to trial after a U.S. federal court judge denied Nostrum's motion for summary judgment seeking to dismiss the case. Shire said it sued Nostrum in 2003 after Nostrum filed a new drug application seeking regulatory approval for a generic version of Carbatrol, Shire's leading epilepsy treatment. In the lawsuit, Shire said it charged that Nostrum infringed upon one of its patents that claims the formulas which include Carbatrol.
