6,918,096 Method and apparatus for displaying a network of thoughts from a thought's perspective
  Issued: July 12, 2005
  Filed: March 30, 2001
  U.S. Class: 715/854
Abstract:
The invention employs a graphical user interface to facilitate user interaction with highly flexible, associative "matrices" that enable users to conveniently organize digitally-stored "thoughts" (inter-related information) and their network of inter-relationships. Each of the thoughts may be affiliated with one or more application programs, such as a word processing or spreadsheet utility, or an Internet browser. Users are able to conveniently select a current thought along with any applications or content associated with that thought by interacting with the graphical representation. That representation is automatically reoriented about the selected thought, and is revised to reflect only those thoughts having predetermined relations to that current thought. Users can easily modify the matrix by interactively redefining relations between thoughts. In addition, the system provides functionality that lets the user filter the matrix based on certain filter criteria. The system then regenerates the matrix and displays the filtered version of that original matrix.

QUALCOMM Incorporated (Nasdaq: QCOM - News), pioneer and innovator of Code Division Multiple Access (CDMA) and other cutting-edge wireless technologies, today filed suit against Broadcom Corporation in federal court in San Diego for infringement of seven QUALCOMM patents. QUALCOMM's lawsuit asserts infringement of patents that are "essential" to the manufacture or use of equipment that complies with the GSM, GPRS and EDGE cellular standards (the "GSM Standards") and to certain interoperability standards for wireless local area networks popularly known as Wi-Fi. Patents that are "essential" to a standard are those that must necessarily be infringed to comply with the requirements of the standard. QUALCOMM's complaint states that Broadcom is infringing six of the patents by the manufacture and sale of integrated circuits for use in GSM Standards handsets and is infringing the remaining patent by the manufacture and sale of semiconductors for Wi-Fi devices. QUALCOMM seeks an injunction against Broadcom's continued manufacture and sale of these products as well as monetary damages.

Sunnyvale, Calif.-based SanDisk Corp. reported today that the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Federal Circuit (CAFC) reversed a summary judgment ruling of non-infringement by a California District Court regarding SanDisk's U.S. Patent No. 5,602,987 ("'987 Patent") on July 8. As a result of the decision, SanDisk said it would renew the prosecution of its infringement claims against Ritek, Pretec and Memorex flash memory cards. SanDisk said the CAFC ruling supports its interpretation of the key inventive features claimed in the '987 patent, and thereby eliminates the primary non-infringement argument of Ritek, Pretec and Memorex.

DataTreasury Corporation, a Long Island-based payment processor, announced today that it has filed patent-infringement lawsuits in the U.S. District Court for the Eastern District of Texas against four major banks. These lawsuits allege that Bank of America, Citigroup, Wachovia and Wells Fargo infringe U.S. Patent Nos. 5,910,988 and 6,032,137, which were issued to DataTreasury in 1999 and 2000 for image capture, centralized processing and electronic storage of document and check information. These patents describe a technology process capable of implementing the federally enacted Check Clearing for the 21st Century Act, popularly known as "Check 21." Annually, Bank of America processes approximately 9.4 billion checks, Citigroup approximately 2.4 billion, Wachovia approximately 4.5 billion and Wells Fargo approximately 3.7 billion. The filing of these four patent-infringement lawsuits follows the recent entry of two Consent Judgments signed by federal judges in Texas, judgments that ended patent-infringement lawsuits that had been pending against one of the world's largest and most respected financial institutions. (Copies of the original Consent Judgments are attached to this news release and may also be viewed at www.datatreasury.com/consentdocuments.) These Consent Judgments explicitly state that DataTreasury's patents are valid and enforceable, and the financial institution in question is now a licensee of DataTreasury's patents.
